How to Compare Insurance – It’s Not Just The Cost

Posted on November 5th, 2011 by

Before purchasing an insurance policy, there are a number of factors which should be considered. The financial stability of the insurance company may not seem important at first, but is often crucial when push comes to shove. Likewise, the dependability of the company is going to be important in the event you have to file a claim.

Do not simply call the phone number that is displayed in big flashing numbers on your television screen. It literally costs thousands of dollars to put that big flashing number in front of you, and the cost of doing so is always going to be absorbed by the policyholders. This is not to say that a television ad means the company will cost too much, but simply to alert consumers that caution is best applied to blind promises made in mass media.

Check the financial ratings of the insurance companies you are considering. The three most popular institutions for this are Standard & Poor, Fitch, and A.M. Best. All three offer ratings that reflect the financial ability of an insurance company to absorb claims costs, and while this may not be a huge concern in ordinary usage, consider the implications of a poorly rated company in the event of a major catastrophe hitting your area, where hundreds or even thousands of claims must be paid out simultaneously.

Decide exactly what type of insurance policy you are looking for by comparing the possible options available to you. Many states have very definitive laws and guideline concerning what type or amount of insurance you are required to have. Find out what your minimum requirement is, and then investigate what will actually work the best above and beyond what the law requires. Remember that complete replacement is rarely a requirement, but without it, you may be left with nothing, or even still owing additional money after the claim is settled.

Look into what car insurance discounts are specifically applicable to you. Are you a professional or public servant? Will you be insuring a minor who has straight A’s in school? Or perhaps you have a long history as a safe driver? These and many other discounts are available through many reputable insurance companies, and can result in you saving a great deal of money. By shopping around for the perfect insurance company to fit your individual needs, you’ll be able to get the best price as well as the most secure protection. You may even avoid falling into claims litigation problems that a small number of insurance companies seem to get bogged in.
